Description:
Potato Dextrose agar is a nutrient-rich microbiological medium with a mildly acidic pH. Fungal growth is favored and is designed to support the growth of yeasts and molds such as saprophytic filamentous molds, aspergillus,alternaria.. Often used in clinical, environmental, food, plant, and research samples, potato dextrose agar encourages mycelial growth, sporulation and enhances pigment expression that helps in morphological identification of many fungi. With the addition of antibiotics, such as streptomycin, and penicillin g, potato dextrose agar bacteria can be suprressed and allow fungal growth. Potato dextrose agar is used to study colony morphology, measure biomass production, and maintain stock cultures.
How it Works:
Potato dextrose agar provides rich, mildly acidic, carbohydrate-heavy surface that favors fungal growth and with antibioitcs supress bacteria. The potato infusion offers complex nutrients, vitamins, and nitrogen that helps mycelial growth, sporulation and pigment formation. Dextrose provides an easily metaboized carbon energy sourch, that helps stimulate the rapid growth of yeasts and molds. The mildly acid is less favorable for bacterial growth, but suitbable for plant-associated fungi. When inoculated and incubated, yeast form creamy to pasty colonies, and molds form filamentous colonies with species specific colors, textures, and sporulation patterns that can be used for identification.
