Description:
Nutrient Agar is a basic culture media used for the cultivation of a wide range of non-fastidious microorganisms. It is composed of peptone, and agar, providing essential nutrients for bacterial growth. Nutrient Agar is ideal for teaching and demonstrating purposes due to its longevity at ambient temperatures without the risk of overgrowth that often occurs in more nutritious substrates. It is one of the more popular non-selective media useful in routine cultivation of microorganisms.
Addition of different biological fluids such as horse or sheep blood, makes it suitable for the cultivation of related fastidious organisms. Peptone, HM peptone B, and yeast extract provide the necessary nitrogen compounds, carbon, and vitamins, and also some trace ingredients necessary for the growth of bacteria. Sodium chloride maintains the osmotic equilibrium of the medium.
