Columbia Agar Base/W Antibiotics
Description:
Columbia Agar plates are enriched, nutrient rich media used as a base for blood agar to cultivate fastidious and non-fastidious bacteria and to observe hemolysis. Peptone mixture of beef/yeast extracts provide abundant nitrogen, vitamins, and growth factors that support fastidious organisms better than basic nutrient media. Corn starch behaves as a neutralizer to toxic metabolites and enhances recovery of certain organisms such as Neisseria and improves hemolytic reactions of some streptococci. NaCl mantains osmotic balance and give essential electrolytes. If adding blood such as 5% sheep blood, it is able to supply hemin and other growth factors and enables visualization of α-, β-, and γ-hemolysis patterns.
