Isopropyl alcohol (IUPAC name propan-2-ol, isopropanol, or 2-propanol) is a colorless, flammable organic compound with a pungent alcoholic odor. It is an organic alcohol with chemical formula (CH3)2CHOH), and is the simplest example of a secondary alcohol. Isopropanol is used as a laboratory or medical solvent, an antiseptic, and other biomedical research purposes. Sterile 70% isopropanol is used in tissue culture hood, sterile pathological works, and clean rooms for antibacterial and sanitization purposes, including solvent for various chemicals. A sterilized 70% isopropanol solution is used for sterile cell biology, pathogenic workflows, and FACS cell sorting procedures. This solution is qualified to be used for the purification precipitation and washing of nucleic acids (DNA & RNA) and proteins in a sterile environment and sterile procedures are required.
