5% Glucose Solution
Cat. No. DCP-PIC10X
Size: 50 mL
Sterile; Ultrapure, Filtered 0.1-micron membrane TWICE and 0.04-micron membrane ONCE.
Description:
5% glucose solution is a commonly used component in cell culture applications, serving multiple important functions. It contains 50 g of glucose per liter of water, with an osmolarity of 278 mOsm/L, making it approximately isotonic with blood. In cell culture, glucose acts as a primary energy source for cells, promoting cell proliferation and division. It helps maintain osmotic pressure, keeping cells hydrated and preventing them from shrinking or bursting. The glucose concentration in cell culture media can range from 1 g/L (5.5 mM) to 10 g/L (55 mM), with 5 mM corresponding to normal physiological levels in human blood. However, it's important to note that high glucose concentrations (above 10 mM) may create conditions analogous to diabetes in the cell culture system, potentially affecting cell behavior and product quality. Therefore, the optimal glucose concentration should be determined based on the specific requirements of the cell line and experimental goals.
Advantages:
- Energy source: Glucose serves as a primary fuel for cells, providing energy through glycolysis and other metabolic pathways.
- Osmolarity regulation: The solution helps maintain osmotic pressure, keeping cells hydrated and preventing them from shrinking or bursting.
- Growth stimulation: Glucose promotes cell proliferation and division.
- Media supplement: It's commonly used to supplement various cell culture media formulations.
- Isotonicity: With an osmolarity of 278 mOsm/L, 5% glucose solution is approximately isotonic, making it suitable for cell culture applications.
- Cryoprotectant: It can serve as a component in cryopreservation media, protecting cells during freezing and thawing processes.
